45 years ago, Biarritz welcomed Europe's first surfers to its beaches. With its large beaches and powerful waves it requires scrupulous supervision by the Life Guards during the summer season.

Miramar Beach
 Beware of the strong currents. Surfing is forbidden


Grande Plage Beach

 beach in the centre of Biarritz with shops nearby. Because of the high number of bathers and surfers, bathing and surfing are subject to strict regulations. Information is provided at thebeach safety post. 


beach at the Port Vieux
Small shady beach, nearby the town centre, ideal for families with young chidren.

Côte des Basques beach
 beautiful beach ideal for surfing but only at low tide. (no sand at high tide)
Warning for surfers :
getting out of the water is difficult at high tide because of rocks.

Marbella beach

Pretty beach out of the centre, difficult access (many steps)



Milady beach

Large beach with parking facilities and playground.
Shore break can sometimes be dangerous.
